Brake pad help
« on: 04 November 2012, 21:16:34 »

Need to change the rear pads on my Mondeo. Been offered Apec pads at £49 for the rears fitted by my usual tyre place. Are they any good? If not what is a reasonable brand? Having just used OEM before, I really have no clue as to which brands are reasonable and which are crap.

Never heard of Apec, but a quick Google leads me to believe they are at the budget end of the market (eg, £11.99 for the rears).

I'd personally go with a name brand (eg, Pagid), and fit them myself (you can do both sides in 30 mins with ease).

Used Apec loads of time. They are at the cheaper end but seem to perform ok. Not performance pads but for everyday driving I've never had any issues.

The only car that I've tried Apec pads/discs on that weren't utterly hopeless is my sister's Morris 1300. That is a low powered, lightweight car. On anything else, they are disappointing or worse. After fitting some to my 525, I replaced them after six weeks with Pagid as 3 hard stops into roundabouts left the car with no brakes. This is also true of a mate's Puma and the Escort my mother used to have. We changed some on a Dolomite  Sprintwith NOS Unipart ones(with asbestos!) and almost ended up with acceptable brakes.

Buy some other, in fact any other brand.

They're crap... But as rears they will probably be sufficient ;)

+1

Although perhaps a false economy, as they don't last anything like as well as genuine ones :-\

Ford pads might be 2-3 times the price, but they Should last 3-4 times longer :y
