This pump seems to come on a lot, is that normal? Seems to be on every time I stop in traffic. One of the rear shocks was replaced just before I bought it I wonder if there is a leak.

Sounds like there could be. Apart from obviously leaking at the shocker (I could hear mine when they last failed) there's a lot of pipe work that it could from.

Apart from the obvious question of why anyone would replace a single shock, not a pair I'd say it's likely that the other side is now leaking

They only replaced one because they were selling the car (to me).  If I hadn't bounced that corner and watched it keep going they wouldn't have done one. The other corner was fine. It cost them £120 just for the part and they were only selling the car for £795.  I felt a bit guilty as the mig came with 12 months MOT, 2 months tax, fsh and only 68K miles.  I would have paid double considering the crap I had already looked at for more money.  Good point though I'll go out and bounce the other corner now, and look for fluid leaks.

How often does the pump normally come on?  Its difficult to hear it except when stationary so maybe it normally happens a lot.

The rear is normal height and it does raise OK if you lift the arm.

Ironically they're not much more for a pair if you buy them using a Trade Club Card  (£150ish IIRC)

All fair points, but they (assuming "they" is some form of garage) should know that all suspension parts should be changed in axle pairs

As for the pump... Unless I have an awful lot of weight in the back I only ever hear it come on at startup, apart from on my saloon when I had a slightly leaking airbag (not oil) and it would come on periodically as you have described

Not quite so bad as mismatched suspension parts though. Fortunately for you, you know that one shock is new so I'd look very closely at the rubber on the other and that could well be where the leak is
