Sorry if this is an "old chestnut " but just wanted some advise.

Car has been running really rough for last few days and has thrown EML on  and when I flashed up the stored codes it came up 17.

Suspecting fault on N/S possibly a plug I started to investigate this morning and I was slightly dissapointed to find plug wells 2/4/6 half full of oil.Checking my records they were last replaced 83k ago back in Sept 2009 with genuine VX parts and done by a renown forum mechanic so no fault lies with how they were done.

Oil has been changed every 4k only every with VX ,and full breather system cleaned every other change and when checked today they were clear.

The O/S had a similar failure back in October last year so is it just "wear,n,tear" and due to age/mileage they should be accepted as a service part or could anything else be not right ??

Also is it practical to be able to replace N/S seals with wiper scuttle left in place as I have managed to now get that watertight and could do without disturbing it again.Managed to get it all apart with it still in situ but doing a few "dry runs" placing the cover on to see what is the best point of access as I have never done this side before.

Sounds like they have failed

Easier to remove scuttle, as you want as much access as possible

I never remove the scuttle......for pretty much any job

Looks doable with scuttle left in place so thats my plan.

Just enquiring if they have just failed with age/mileage as nothing could have caused restriction as all sqeeky clean !!

Did mine with scuttle left in place. Just get a third hand to hold the wiring out the way

A piece of string or wire tied around the loom & tied up to the bonnet strut does a better job & doesn't argue or answer back

Yes I have got cable tray removed and have wiring loom pulled back and tied  with string to bonnet strut and bonnet alarm trigger mounting so nice and clear.

Just wondered why they have both failed in the space of a few months ?? although I know I do exceptional mileage from the norm

I used about 6 bungees last time to hold all the wires out the way  Totally removing the cable tray would have been better ... Its simple to remove the cable tray after a few times , getting it back in place is an another story

I don't remove the cable tray from the loom personally. Just tie it up out the way as much as possible, do a dry run as you have, then go for it. So removing the scuttle would give me as much extra access as removing the rear bumper.

On my various 3.2's they all needed cam cover gaskets before 90k. So I guess that's their life.

Done a few dry runs just to get an idea of how its best to get cover back on given the slightly ackward postion you have with the firewall and wires/plug leads etc but does look doable with luck

Trip to local stealers in the morning heres hoping they have the bits in stock as need car mobile later in the day or it,s 150 miles in a Ford Ka

isnt it recommended to leave overnight for the sealant to set.

Thats for the oil cooler "go"...rtv sealant rubberises pretty quick so by the time its all back together...which with an Omega could be quite a while .would have expected sealant to be oil tight.
