As TB said, no internal floppy drive available AFAIK.  I have a USB floppy drive and USB PCMCIA card, but doesn't boot from that either.

Going back to my original question, can I install linux on the new HD by using an external cage and another PC, then install it in this laptop?  I know it isn't stable, but if I can get 6 more months out of this laptop even just for web surfing it would be great.

As hinted earlier, can you take knacker drive out, put in another system, ghost in to new drive, then put that in?

Any freeware I can use?  I have considered buying Nero, but hate to spend more money on this.  Don't they have a 30-day trial?
