I too have tried - my best mate likes to play guitars, has ever since I've known him - but can only make noise.

That MaxV6 can make a tune out of one as well...  ...and is a dab hand at tuning them...  ...not that having one in tune helps in my case

I had a few small "sessions" later in the evening. It's really uncomfortable. Countered by a little bit of progress, causing a bit more pain, and so on. Bloody masocistic it is!

Stevie Ray Vaughan used very heavy strings because he said they sounded much better.This caused his fingertips to become calloused.During performances the calloused parts would crack and break away from his fingertips,so to be able to continue he would quickly superglue them back on.
Thats commitment I suppose. ...........it was worth it though.

Careful Albs  . . .  you will confuse them . .   they will think you have to  buy guitar strings by weight . 

Example:  "can I have a hundredweight of Ernie Ball Power Slinkys please " . . .  .

Back in the bad old days   all you could get were Medium gauge  . .  .which were very heavy by todays standards.

This has just made me think of an answer for the next time I am asked "why do you  use such heavy strings "

I will answer  " I am trying to build my shoulder muscles up !"

Ive always called thick strings,heavy.Maybe its because I is thick.
I used to use ultra light (8,s) when I played regularily,but was always snapping the E, so moved up to 10,s but never bothered building up enough strength in the fingers to get really comfortable with them.Depends to an extent on style of playing I suppose,and how much effort your prepared to put in.
Ive always liked to bend the strings a lot,but was far to lazy to put much effort into the whole thing tbh.

Btw Al,I still have a floor mat sat at work for you if you still want it ?
