Phillips have developed a new LED bulb which has double the efficiency of Fluorescent lamps, where the current generation of LED bulbs are about the same. Initially they will be expensive (like most new technologies when launched), but will come down in price as the volumes grow.

In the US if all industry adopted these bulbs it save $12bn on energy bill per year and mean 50 less medium power stations would be required. So this may help our poor energy situation!

It could also halve the cost of running LED running lights on modern cars.

  Where I now work they have had an experiment done with LED street lighting. It proved so sucessful that all the street lighting has now been changed over to LED. Saves a fortune in electric bills

I went to a trade show back in January, and one of the stands there was a dedicated led bulb supplier. he showed me the various diffrent bulbs they do and also showed me a box he had with an energy meter connected to 5x 50w gu10 bulbs and the equivalent in led bulbs. for a year running an average 8 hours a day the 5x 50w ran at a cost of around £92 where as the LEDs ran at a cost of around £5 a year. the bulbs retail at about £8-£10 each and have a 2 year guaranty. it won't be long before we all change to LEDs as normal bulbs will become obsolete(just look at the 100w. bayonet fitting).

If they make it so you can adjust the white balance / colour, it will open a whole new dimension to the TV remote / Central heating thermostat husband / SWIMBO battles.

Well on paper they look good. But then so did the low energy light bulbs. We have a fitting with four low energy bulbs and one has gone (already) despite being guaranteed for a zillion hours (just who keeps receipts for light bulbs?). Can we find a replacement that looks the same and gives off the same colour light. Err No. I can see LEDs being the same.

Are the street light LEDs white or that atrocious orange colour?

A couple of weeks ago I bought 2 LED spot light bulbs for the kitchen, expensive but thought I would start to convert the kitchen as originals blew..... I should have read the packet better though as I opened them both to fit and then discovered they were colour changing......   I guess they will end up in Miss Vamps bedroom in due coarse......

It is still my intention to change, they will soon get cheaper to buy.......

My house is now lit with 46 Cool White 4.6w GU10 LEDs (three storeys, as loft has been converted). When the electrician first came round he put in one of each variety: warm white, daylight and cool white for us to choose. Warm white is a bit orange, daylight is OK, but I really like the crisp illumination of the cool white.

A good tip is to pay the extra pence and get dimmable, especially if you have lights with twin switches (hallway and landing, for example). If they are not dimmable, the leakage across the live switch makes non-dimmable bulbs flash intermittently).
