Erm, bit worried...exhaust smoke!
« on: 27 April 2013, 18:19:00 »

Driving along yesterday, got caught in traffic, stopped the car and I saw smoke coming from the exhaust. Surely this isn't normal. Ambient temperature outside was 16degrees so it cant be the usual smoke/steam you see on cold days. Also I couldn't tell if it was blue smoke either. Gave it some revs, and some more revs and now seems to be fine, although I could smell an eggy smell in the car at the time of it smoking. Is there such thing as a cat building up gasses and then releasing them occasionally?

To point out, its just had an oil and filter change, plus breather clean, approx 300 miles ago.

I just hope to god its not anything to do with the piston rings (oil seal) or whatever it is.

Any ideas? Z22XE auto.

This is probably a silly answer but that happened in my 2.6 last year and I thought it was the cat but it turned out to be the back exhaust box was blocked.

I would say cats, it may clear itself

I won't be overlay concerned about it, my V6 used to make a real smell after driving it ambitiously then it would clear itself  :y

eggy smell is normally something to do with moisture in the cats.  Could be nothing, could be early signs of failing cats.  Just keep an eye on it, not much to worry about :y

Brand new complete genuine GM Exhaust from front to back fitted about 18 months ago, so wouldnt of though it would be this, but ill keep an eye on it. No smoke yesterday when i used it, but i did give it a bit of beans, and the eggy smell came back for a couple of minutes  :-\
