2.5td oil filter
« on: 18 May 2013, 21:42:37 »

Does anyone know if there are different types or sizes of oil filter fitted to the 2.5td engine?
I bought an oil filter from the bay and was listed as for the 2.5td but when I went to fit it earlier the hole through the center of the new one is smaller than the hole on the filter I removed. As you can imagine this was very annoying as I had to put old filter back in and refill the engine with the oil I had just drained out.  :'(

Yup, one for U25DT and one for X25DT

X25DT is later engine, with MAF. Oil filter housing has plastic cap.

U25DT is earlier engine. Oil filter housing has metal cap.

Two oil filter variants on the TD.

U25DT engine should have a metal-topped filter casing.
Sounds like this is the erroneous filter that you've been supplied with.

Yours should be the later X25DT unit with plastic-topped filter casing.
Not sure of the Vx part no; though I do know that the Fram part no is CH5979ECO. Any decent motor factors should be able to cross-reference and supply the correct filter from that info.

Steer well clear of Halfords, as the X25DT engine doesn't exist ... according to their catalogues ... and their baseball-capped muppets staff! >:(

Only went to halfords for sockets to get the filter cap off.

Thanks for that guys. I was supplied a fram filter and the part number on the box is ch5565. So guess I need the other one. :y

Just as a matter of interest, you can change the filter without draining the oil.

my reg number  never matched up with right filter & I always had to make sure I purchased the one with the largest bore, which I think is slightly shorter too. my mig was a late 98.

Vx part number for the X25DT lump is 90542604:

Here's the correct oil filter housing cap/gubbins for the X25DT:

Hope that this sorts the confusion! ;)

PS: Just grabbed a box of 4 x 5 litre cans of Geenuine Vx 10/40 Semi-synthetic for £48.28 inc. 8)

That's 'Trade' price ... so have a friendly chat with your Vx parts chap.

Sump capacity for the TD is 6.5 litres ... and ours gets changed every 2.5k miles ... religiously! :y
