Train question ? Seth maybe!
« on: 16 June 2013, 10:02:14 »

Hi
We are trying to figure out the quickest train route from north Wales to S. Wales ,specifically Wrexham or surrounds to Saundersfoot or surrounds.
There does not seem to be a direct line so was wondering which route is best
have looked at journey planner and indications are about 5 hours or more but seem to be a few changes.
Any input appreciated.

Probably quicker and easier to pop into England.  Something like Wrexham-Birmingham-Bristol-Swansea-Tenby....  :-\

I'm sure one of the Trainspotters will advise, be careful of that Hornby fella though, he has an appetite for postcounts!!!  :o  ;D

Many ATW services originating at Holyhead/Manchester are direct trains to West Wales.

Can you be specific, perhaps, regarding your date of travel? ;)

Hi \Seth
Yes
from wrexham  or surrondsto somewhere within half an hour or so of saundersfoot ont01/08/13
we will have a car in s wales so collecting not an issue.
It is for my good lady to come down after work or mid afternoon to join me and the boys , and possibly a return on Sun 04/08/.
I have looked a train journey planner, just wanted some guidance on which would be most direct /quickest route ,there does not seem to be a west coast route ,is that correct?
i am happy to collect her from Carmarthen ?Llenelli? or where ever is easiest to get to .
Cheers

Purely my own suggestion:

Southbound:
1635 Wrexham General - Shrewsbury (arr 1714)
(1434 Holyhead - Cardiff Central service)

1740 Shrewsbury - Carmarthen (arr 2136)
(1630 Manchester Piccadilly - Milford Haven service)

Northbound:
1229 Carmarthen - Cardiff Central (arr 1456)
(1128 Milford Haven - Manchester Piccadilly service)

1522 Cardiff Central - Wrexham General (arr 1807)
(1522 Cardiff Central - Holyhead service)

Dead easy to access Carmarthen Railway Station from the A40; as there's no suitable service on the Whitland - Pembroke Dock branch line (for Saundersfoot) at the times you've outlined.

Will check later to see if there are any planned engineering works on those dates.

Seth - is it really 4 hours from Shrewsbury to Carmarthen?

And that's with a considerable amount of high speed running for most of the journey. 8)

Takes longer on the (geographically) direct Heart of Wales route!
