Computer help needed.
« on: 23 June 2013, 16:51:16 »

Switched on pc last night, went to internet and something called ZoneAlarm had added its own toolbar to the Google toolbar. I deleted the ZoneAlarm thingy and checked e-mails. Went to add/remove programs and there were 3 programs under ZoneAlarm. I clicked on remove ZonAlarm Free Firewall and the PC just froze. Switched off and went to bed. Switched on today after about 3 abortive attempts and there on my desktop is the ZoneAlarm Icon, also in the bottom right of the screen. Then I started to get a ZoneAlarm popup window appearing in the bottom right, asking me something or other, with 2 buttons accept/deny. I click deny and, up it pops again, and again and again. Go to add/remove programs, select the first ZoneAlarm program and click remove, which it did. Go to ZoneAlarm free Firewall click remove, and I'm still waiting 30 minutes later for anything visual to happen. The pc is running extremely slowly, I understand NOTHING about computers but in Windows task manager/processes I can see Install.exe user. cpu 50. Mem Usage 603,128k. this is continually fluctuating between 300,00+k and 616,828k? Any help greatly appreciated...  :'(

If you are running Avast AV as well as ZA, conflict issues can or will occur. Not a good idea to run two AV programs together.

I don't have Avast, and did NOT download ZA..??  :-\ Have e-mailed ZA asking how to get rid of the darned thing? Seems there are a lot of people on the net who cannot get rid of it?  :(

Been running Avast A/V and Zone Alarm (free) firewall (only) together for years (since Win XP) without any major issues - some minor inconveniences with Zone Alarm and its damn popups, but they can be "zapped"

The problems occur when running the ZA AV with Avast. :y

Have you downloaded anything lately and forgot to 'untick' all the 'free' crap that comes with it. Almost anything that's free to download now comes with a magic toolbar that will make your computer run so much faster and save you lots of your precious time. ::)
Always check what you're actually getting before pressing that run/save button.

Thats why I posted firewall only - 2 a/vs will always clash ;)

Thanks for input everyone. I always read the small print before downloading anything, in fact I can't remember the last time I did download anything? Not had a reply from ZA yet. But I think I have found the problem, I have an eighteen year old son who knows all about computers. 'Sod all'?? I have been running Eset Nod 32 for ages, do not need another system. But thanks again. It was nice to get a couple of replies.....  :y
