thanks Eric and Symes, I've checked both fuses, hoping its a poor connection, I'll get the meter on it tomorrow, guess you are right about secondhand pumps too Eric they will be a bit old now.

Well I've had the pump off this morning, for anyone doing this you need to remove the pump and the mounting from the car, the bolts holding the pump to the mounting just spin and you need to be above them.

Anyway tested out the pump and it works fine, my pump won't operate unless the engine is running?

I'm coming to the conclusion that it is the sensor as it will pump the car up occasionally but never lets it down. Has anyone had these to bits to repair rather than replace? I have been offered a secondhand one but may go the stealer route anyone know the price new? I live in France and everything here is a ripoff!!

Thanks for any advice

Well to all those interested this is now FIXED.

Thanks to allbitz for the sensor which di not solve the problem, I did a bit more investigation and found I could get the pump to operate from the connector at the sensor, and likewise get the solenoid (mounted on the pump) to operate to release the pressure.

The fault was a corroded connector under the rear seat squab, I cut this out, soldered the wires and all is good now.

Anyone want a tested and verified height sensor, only £316 at the stealers!!
