Hi ,over the last week or so the starter motor on my TD has not engaged on a couple of occasions ie it just "whizzes" but starts on the second or third attempt.

So is it on its way out?( I suspect so) if so can it be refurbed ?
Can I do it myself?
Has anyone done this? What would i need to do?

On a good note passed its MOT today with just an advisory on front pads ,result!!

If solenoid knackered it usually just clicks and doesn't spin.  Check starter motor bolts tight first as these starters are pre-engaged.  Failing that suspect broken pinion spring, knackered pinion or ring gear

I agree. The solenoid needs to move to make the circuit for the starter itself

A valid point, but part of the question was about overhauling the starter motor. And given the solenoid is only held on by two bolts, changing it should be easy enough

Why change it if its working ok?  Probable cause of ops problem is that starter spins ok (hence solenoid ok) but not always engaging with ring gear.  Either out of alignment (bolts loose), or sticky/damaged pinion or damaged ring gear.

If bolts tight suggest removing starter for inspection and examine ring gear through starter aperture

Right so will get under it today and have a looksie

Anyone point me in the direction of a new one, if its not loose fixings? I guess as usual this BMW lump is going to be different from everyone elses so will be specific fit!!

So could be not engaging on part of ring!

Reliable enough to use 2nd hand, and dead easy once intake is off.
