Electrical 'burning' smell when heated seat is on
« on: 26 September 2013, 18:51:20 »

Hi all,

Has anyone experienced a burning smell from the front heated seat (passenger side) when switched on? The seat heats as expected but feels hot to the back as if it is on full setting continuously. I'd like to sort this out but it would be great to take advice from anyone who might have experienced/fixed the same so I look for the most likely cause first.

Thanks

Is it hot in just one spot, or all over?

Leather of cloth?

Thanks for responding. It is leather and it does feel hotter in one area.

The burning smell will soon fix itself ::)

Downside is the heater will stop working ;D

The element is sewn in to the leather, so not really changable. Sometimes possible to cut out and rejoin the faulty bit of element.  If it has an occupancy sensor, that adds an extra delicate complication, but as yours is in the back, rather than seat, that shouldn't get in the way too much.

This repair, or at least the stripdown, is far from simple.

Thanks for the information. It looks like it will be a challenge then. I do like to sort the issues as they arise so if there is additional information to help I'd very much appreciate it.

Cheers

Seat comes out
Remove the inserts that the head restraints go in to (challenging, and you have to break a blind plastic tab)
Seperate the back from rest of seat
Remove the number of clips holding seat to the rods (probably 20-30, all challenging)
Start to remove the leather from frame, removing the lumbar adjustment and side airbag as you go.
Failed part of element should be locatable by scorch marks.

Above is purely from memory, so steps may be in wrong order, or missed.

Much appreciated, I know what I'm in for now and will plan it in as soon as I can motivate myself... but I will do it.

Thanks for the time and information.
