Heater Matrix Flush, hot or cold?
« on: 29 October 2013, 20:08:15 »

Been using my trusty 2.2 mostly these past months, need to get the 3.2 out and about. (Its better for 4 up touring  ::)) The heat has been poor from the vents, so going to flush matrix. Did confirm top pipe into matrix is hot, bottom one Luke warm.

Read jimbobs guide, done some research. Going to soften the hose pipes in hot water, but some say to get car hot first so that the bulk head pipes are hot. Worth doing, or cause too many issues with hot V6 lump in the way?  :-\

As no one appears too sure, I'll go with Luke warm. As I have to move it on the drive anyway

I can't see it would make any difference either way.  :-\   It'll just make the job more awkward if everything's hot.  ::)

Go to the scrapyard and get the 2 hoses then fit them on the matrix pipes and block the bottom hose and fill the matrix with Fernox and hot water and leave it over night then flush it with cold water. It works wonders :y

Cheers chaps & thanks for asking Webby. Job Jobbed.  :y

First thing, the heater matrix pipes came off easy as pie, thought I would struggle here, but off in seconds with scuttle still on.

I first tried to soften the pipes in near boiling hot water...

Even though they were soft, still a feker, so in the end just left ends on, water loss was minimal, oddly reverse flushing saw hardly any loss.

Pipes all hooked up...

I first flushed the normal way coolant flows, that came out very clear. I then reverse flushed it, horrible merky water came out. Then went back to normal direction, then back to reverse, totally clear this time.

Big improvement from before, on "Hi" it was only luke warm, now it was hot. Although I was hoping for more, so I dropped the coolant from the rad too. As since I got the 3.2 I was unsure on its coolant history, although it was nice and pink.

Flushed coolant system so pure water was in, it was here that heat really picked up, on the second flush of pure water hands almost burning at the heat coming out of the vents!  8)

Got the system to pure water, then drained rad again. Topped up with pure GM anti-freeze, got about 4L is in. Expecting to get a little more in after a run and the coolant stabilises.
