ps one final thing to note. one of the reasons I whipped this belt cover off in such a hurry was (in addition to the squeaking) a smell of burning when I sniffed down the scuttle of my latest journey in her. the smell was EXACTLY like the smoking cambelt that saw me, martin and steve stranded in oxford  :-[

obviously it was nowhere near as bad but it was noticeable when I shoved my head round the scuttle when the engine had been running for about an hour.

ANYWAY one thing I forgot to mention (in all the ''oh shite my tensioner's loosing grease'' commotion) was that just before I removed the belt cover there was a piece if old shredded belt hanging down  ??? then when I got the belt cover off there was a bit of a ''gathering'' of shredded belt parts round under the crank sprocket.

how weird is that! I gave everything a really good clean to get rid of this shite before I put it back together so where did this come from lol its definitely not the new belt but where were those pieces hiding  :o

one final thing (sorry I know i'm annoying)

heres day time pics of the belt on the sprockets (although still shite quality - note to self, buy better camera). I trust this is normal... the belt to be quite far back on the cam sprockets and the belt to be as far back on the idlers as they'll go....tried to get a piece of paper down the back to make sure there was some space but I couldn't get the paper to bend down at the back. very tricky. was just trying to validate that it wasn't touching the rear cover. I am fairly confident i'm worrying about nothing but its nice to know that I've covered every avenue :)

Clearly you failed to remove all the biits of shredded belt.

I have heard a slight squeek where the belt makes slight contact with the cover on add occasions, normaly slackening the cover botls and re-positioning it slightly sorts it

Probably the source of your burning smell ;)

Hopefully it wasnt from the new belt. im going to rotate the engine several times and double check the belt for piece of mind. certainly havent seen any problems with it so far. :)
