Simple BT Infinity question
« on: 18 December 2013, 17:46:41 »

My Dads BT internet is being upgraded on Friday to Infinity.

At the moment he has a hub in the hall of the bungalow and then a cable connecting the hub ( hunk of dark coloured plastic with blue light) to his PC in the "computer room". That cable runs under the hall carpet to the adjacent room!

My suggestion is to get the BT engineer to instal the new hub(or will it be the existing hub re used?) in the computer room. That may involve extra cost and the engineer doing a 25 foot bit of cabling outside the house and drilling a new entry hole.

Question is..... Is it worth asking him to do that or just replace like for like?

BT's web site.....says you get a homehub 5 with the infinity package.....which has wireless.....so i'd suggest you just get a usb wifi dongle for the pc and go wireless  :y

Yup, HH5 now. Its almost as shit as the HH3. No Openreach modem needed now, so thats one power socket saved.

Ideally, you want only one phone socket if possible, so I'd still leave router where it is, and use a cable (Homehub Wifi is pretty poor).

You get a white "Openreach" Infinity box to accompany the newish black router unit that you either already have, or if you have the tall old style router with hub phone facility that should be replaced with the newer design.

They put a new junction/outlet box on your wall for the phone connection and the DSL cable to the new Infinity box.

I have found a kind minded engineer will put a cable in to the new wall box where you want it, but technically they apparently only are "costed" by BT to not go further than the first incoming junction box as exists without a charge of £99.  But it does depend on how the engineer, who is self employed, decides where the incoming BT line ends and your internal lines/junction boxes start.

Hope this helps TD. :y :y :y

Nope, HH5 has a VDSL modem built in. So no more Openreach modem.

who is self employed
Very, very, very, very rarely. BT mostly use their own staff, unless there is a mass upgrade underway (like the replacement of overheating Openreach modems a couple of years back) when they subcontract some parts to other companies (who may subcontract to self employed)

Not down here with the "Openreach" guys I have spoken to. Indeed it was only in August that the OR engineer when fitting a new line into my friends house explained he had to get clearance to do more than expected so he could ensure he was paid as a self employed man.

As for the "Open reach" box, why did I have one installed as I described only last March?  Have they changed it since then TB? :o :o ??? ???

There was a problem with high fault rates in the summer, so thats probably why they had contractors in again. Did their vans say "Working on behalf of Openreach"?

HH5, unlike its predescessor the HomeHub3, has a VDSL Modem (which is what the white OR modem is (actually, both OR types, Huawei and ECI, the OR modem is a full blown router, just not used in that way with BT config on)) built in, hence no OR modem required.  HH5 has been out a couple of months.

A lot of 3rd party routers are now starting to get VDSL modems built in, so a fair few FTTC customers are throwing out the OR modems.
