Engine Racing
Today coming home from work the engine started racing,so pulled over put into neutral and engine
was revving at 4000 rpm, turned off engine for about a minute but when started again still went to 4000 rpm so drove
home ,about 3 miles and by then it was back to normal, turned engine off then started it again
and was fine ticking over at about 500rpm,has anyone any ideas what happened, bit worried as got
quite a lot of long journeys coming up,thanks

Wow, that needs sorting, 4k could make braking difficult. :o

Some possibles.
Air leak. Idle control valve loose in its seat letting air in, breathers leaking letting air in, split or loose air intake rubbers etc

Faulty idle control valve, or it sticking open/needs a clean although icv usually causes stalling.

Maf fault.

Sticking throttle assembly, could be gummed up, seized or not seating correctly. Usually because some eejit mechanic had tried to wedge it open to get round an icv fault
