i genrally dont drink during the week, i will have a few over the weekend, and normally all in moderation so i never see that as a great issue.

If i drink 2 or 3 over the weekend i will be lucky anymore than 4 is a bit of a blow out

Good luck at the medical .. butif they do a "Liver Function Test" and a "Kidney Function Test" they will be able to guess at your average consumption rate over the past 6-9 months !!!!!  a few days off makes no difference whatsoever !!

I had those tests done a couple of weeks ago. At the appointment with my GP he asked me about my drinking, I sort of told him what I drank, and he said that there was no evidence of that in the tests.
I only drink Whisky, so it must be good for me. ;D ;D ;D :y

snap!!   ;D

How is a liver/kidney function test performed, and how are the results measured?

Surely if the "function" of these organs was under what it should be, that means those organs are damaged?

Does that mean then, if I drink within guidelines (which I USUALLY do!) that those organs are still damaged, or not functioning as well as someone who doesn't drink?

The test is a blood test, and the blood is analised for various enzymes. When your bodies liver or kidneys remove alchohol from your system they use enzymes that the body produces.

IF a large amount of alchohol is being "cleaned" on a regular basis, the clever body pre-produces these enzymes in readiness... thus .. if you have these enzymes present in your blood stream it is an INDICATION that you MAY be a regular user of alchohol.

It can take several weeks of non-alchohol use for these enzymes to dissapear.

Thats the way the SMO explained it all to us some years back .. :)

Edit to say .... SNAP  ....   :)

They really are not accurate!  :) ;) :) which may be a good thing for some!! They are much better suited to displaying the aging of the liver within an anatomical range. However this aging can only be used as a rough marker of how the liver has come to function.

The true way is a liver biopsy, which hurts. This would normally only be used in the case of chirriosis or when abnormal enzymes are detected.

One the whole, the best evidence a doc has at his disposal are your testomony, and his/her judgement. ( :))

I don't anticipate problems anyway - we are allowed to drink sensibly! :)
