it can stop you getting a blood clot in/on your lungs when at high altitudes...amongst other uses :y

Nothing to prevent blood clots. In fact some reports suggested an increase in frequency of clotting/clots. It can help with altitude sickness and perhaps improve blood flow through the lungs at altitude.
