Hi everybody,i am in the process of stripping down the engine to do valve stem seals and headgasket and just wondered whats the best way to set the timing.I take it i set the crank pulley 90 deg btdc, put head back on, head bolts torque then set cams in then set lobes upwards on number 1 cylinder on both camshafts put on bearing caps torque down then put cam sprockets on set them to tdc marks on cover, lock them, torque them, then bring crank pully to tdc mark and refit belt.Need to know the best way as this is  the first time ive done this and need to get it right.Thanks

Pretty much it, although you'll struggle to keep a cam in a set position.

Pretty certain the sprocket and cam are keyed, so only need to worry about position once sprockets fitted...

In case you're unaware, the caps orientation and order must be preserved. This is vital

Thanks, i have kept all the followers bridges in plastic box marked up for each cam, how do i keep the cams at tdc and get the locking tool in if its gonna be a bit of a fight lol.Any tips Cheers

  Yep see what you mean, the bottom end looks a bit covered,carbon from high oil burning, is it wise to clean the piston crowns and can i turn the crank pulley while the head is off.Is there a way of testing the piston with fluid when there still in and anything i should do to improve mating face on block etc.Cheers
