Probably a combination of all of those, although I doubt it does much of any of them. After all, it is a German car, and they go to all sorts of complicated lengths for what  is really only a theoretical improvement.

+1,pretty sure its there to cut induction noise :y

In that case perhaps I should refit that bit of plastic what which I liberated from the filter housing ::)
