F1 Bahrain gp.
« on: 05 April 2014, 19:04:32 »

Rods posted an F1 prediction thread a while back.

My prediction. Mercedes will win the championship. Hopefully with Lewis. Probably a bit obvious by now tbh. But there we are, better late than never ;D

As for Bahrain. Night race. Love these.
The cars look visibly quicker to me. Well rapid. Camera work might be affecting that view. They are at the beginning of their development so more to come.

There was an interesting debate at the start of the programme, re the direction of F1. I took from it that I like the idea of using hybrid technology to INCREASE performance. Benefits being less fuel used from a smaller lighter more powerful motor(s). Don't think anybody buys into the green aspect, total bs there.

As for the race. I fear though that the Mercs will romp away and field will spread out behind them trying to keep up. With those teams with the Mercedes power plant to the for. French shite struggling as usual.

Read an article today on why the Mercedes engine is more powerful and efficient that the other manufacturers offerings, apparently they have a split turbo, with the compressor much more directly in the airstream and closer to the inlet ports. The idea came from the chassis side, where they were looking at the engine packaging, rather than from the engine developers, it was only when they tried it they realised the performance / efficiency gains they could get.

It is bizarre at times how improvements are accidently made in engineering.  :-[ :-[ :-[

Hopefully we will now see just how good or not Vettel is now he has not got the fastest car and will have to overdrive the Red Bull and show good race craft in overtaking to get reasonable results.

Personally, this is where I think Lewis and particularly Alonso will show him up. Although I don't like Alonso after what happened at Mclaren, IMO he is the best all round driver currently on the grid, with Lewis a close second and the faster of the two.

Yes they ran a shaft from the turbine(?)at the back in the normal place, to the compressor(?) sited at the front. Heat lost 10 fold before the induction. Better "packaging" as a result. Etc. etc. Result? Extra 80 bhp over Renault engines.

Plus Mercedes get a bigger advantage as a constructor with three years more development than their competitors. A conflict if interest maybe? But they are taking full advantage. :y

Well. After lap 2 it took until lap 9 to see an overtake attempt. Which failed.

Lap 10, Button takes Botas and Hulkenburg

That was a good race. Plenty of overtaking and edge of seat stuff.

Good result. Nice to see Ricciardo put one on Vettel

In fact I wonder if Vettel will get a penalty for moving excessively on the white car that tried to overtake him
