Air Con Expansion Valve
« on: 17 April 2014, 08:48:22 »

Had new condenser/dryer fitted to climate sytem few weeks ago and my usual air con guy couldnt get the temp at the air vents lower than around 9 C

As system hasnt worked since I bought car and unsure how long before that,it was suggested that the Expansion Valve may be sticking and might free up with use.The entire system was checked for leaks and found to be sound so expansion valve was beleived to be problem.

For last few days I have been checking temperature at vents and it doesnt drop lower than around 9C even with car running at normal speed and set at Low with blowers full.

Expansion valve seems to cost around £45/£50 but curious to understand firstly where it is fitted in car and how complicated or simple is it to get at and replace ,so I have an idea of expected costs should we go down that path for solution as would like it working correctly

It's on the end of the air conditioning evaporator, up under the dashboard, so changing it is a bit of a PITA. Glovebox out, passenger airbag out, heater blower and ducting out before you can get near it. It will also need the system vacuuming out  before and refilling after.
