Captive "nut" problem
« on: 19 May 2014, 14:53:03 »

Not on an Omega but on my 4x4.

The rear spoiler is held on by five 13mm head bolts which go into a frustrum shaped device that fits into a hole drilled in the roof. When the bolt goes through into the the thing shaped like the bucket an elephant stands it spreads and  grips the hole. Problem is two have pulled through and enlarged the holes.

Anyone got a practical solution to repair it please? My only thought at the mo is to glue some strips of metal in the hole to effectively make it smaller. Not very elegant . I need to do something to stop it parting company at speed.   :o

Anything like this any good, assuming you can get the other fixing out?  :-\

I'm struggling to imagine what the original fixings looked like, as the description doesn't sound like what I'd assume would be there.

But, drill out (or grind the lip off) and then replace with a larger rivnut?

Or lots and lots of Tigerseal/Sikaflex/Würth ;D

If Sikaflex won't hold it down, nothing will ;D

If I am imagining what you describe correctly, the fitting is a truncated cone with the fat end away from you, so it doesn't pull out? Yet in your case, it did! Sounds like the fittings were inserted from the other side during manufacture, yes?
A quick ebay search gave me this:-

www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=threaded+inserts&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xthreaded+pop+rivets&_nkw=threaded+pop+rivets&_sacat=0

They may be a bit small for you, but if I'm on the right track for what you need, I'm sure they make them bigger. Just to clarify, the threaded rivets are inserted into your cleared hole and the tool squeezes the long, plain part of the rivet just like a normal "pop" rivet, securing it from behind. Remove the tool and you have a threaded insert just like the original.

Guys , some interesting answers there. I Love those threaded rivet inserts.

The metal fittings are similar to these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/m3-captive-nuts-x-50-/281334045355?pt=UK_DIY_Material_Nails_Fixing_MJ&hash=item4180d0daab . I think they are a poor design as it is inevitable that someone will overtighten and enlarge the hole.

Having had a better look at it and a good search of the Internet, I think the easiest solution is YZ250's . I am not keen on glue as the spoiler has to come off for high level brake light bulb replacement.

What are they called please and do they come in M8 (13mm equivalent bolt head ) on Ebay??

They're called rivnuts...

OK I'll be helpful, go here: http://www.memfast.co.uk/ ;)

[edit] His insert tool is regarded as one of the best and he'll replace broken mandrels for free, otherwise this design is good: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rivnut-Rivetnut-Nutsert-Fitting-tool-M4-M5-M6-Kit-car-rivet-nut-special-insert-/380904779400?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item58afb1ae88

Both are infinitely easier to use than the 'pop rivet gun' style tools.

The fixings that I posted are called in-pull nuts or turn-nuts.  :y
