It's all over the news here!  I suspect that someone in the SNCF is feeling the heat right now ;D

Mad, it rarely happens here as we dont have a public railway (public = incompitent) unless its been a concious decision in which case the lcearances are altered in advance of delivery (Pendolinos are one I can think of).

There are bots of the network whee certian types cant go (e.g. A4's can not go to Carlisle at the moment due to clearance issues)

Best of it is they are probably Alstom (French) trains.....and Alstom know the network as well as SNCF!

Receding the platform edges is all well and good, but what happens when people go to dis/embark the regional trains that used to fit :-\

I've seen trains in Germany where a ramp extends automatically out of the train over any gap. It was very impressive !

I used to regularly see the Loco's used to haul the car/lorry trains through the chunnel being roaded up to the maintainance depot in Willesden, north London. Apparantly they were too big to go through the tunnels on the main line from Folkstone to London. Seems barmy to me - moving a train on the road becasue the track clearance is wrong.

Cheaper than sorting the tunnels etc on the victorian built railway when you are planning HS1 with plenty of clearance :y

Also, for a single loco move it can be cheaper by road (if yoiu are having to hire a loco to do the drag)
