Windows Image Backup
« on: 29 May 2014, 15:19:48 »

After having to replace the hard drive fitted to my 'new' computer running Win7, I'm having a problem trying to restore my Image Backup, due, appparently to MS' piss poor backup system, in that it claims it cannot find my Image backup, even though I can see it on the external drive. I have tracked down various suggestions, and am currently trying this one:

Even if you can't restore from the system image, then you should be able to mount the virtual hard disk (.vhd) file using the Computer Management Disk Management Tool - I've got stuff back this way - don't delete your system image on your backup drive! Once you've got your machine working again (or on another machine) - do:
1) Right click on My Computer and select "Manage"
2) From Computer Management, select "Disk Management"
3) Once this has loaded (you have to wait a little), right click the Disk Management node and select "Attach VHD" (don't select Readonly)
4) Browse to your VHD file and select it (this will be somewhere like Q:\WindowsImageBackup\{Machine Name}\Backup {date}\{Guid}.vhd
You can now assign a drive letter to the virtual hard disk and browse it as though it were another drive and pull stuff off it. The mapping is lost at reboot, but allows you to recover lost stuff.

I have found two .VHD files in the WindowsIimageBackup folder, but I don't understand what is meant in para(4) :[You can now assign a drive letter to the virtual hard disk and browse it as though it were another drive and pull stuff off it. The mapping is lost at reboot, but allows you to recover lost stuff/i]

Can anyone enlighten me please?

I think that, once you've attached the disk image, you should see the device graphically in the lower half of the "disk management" window along with your hard disk(s), cdrom and so on.

To access the files it contains, you need to right click on it and select "change drive letter" (or something similar), select an unused drive letter, and after that, you will be able to browse to that drive letter using windows explorer and access the files it contains.

Thanks BTC, I had got that far, but am not sure what the drive letters mean. If I change it from default, F in my case, what do I change it to, and what happens then??? :-\ :-\ :-\

I have now recovered my image, even though Windows said it couldn't find it using the OE Widows disc. I took a punt and tried using my repair disc, which is merely a boot disc, and it then found the Image??? ??? ??? ???
