Changing the flasher changed the symptom. That makes me suspicious of the part.

I think I'd be getting the meter out about now...

Funny you should say that Jaime but I have a nagging gut instinct re the replacement flasher relay :-\  Already made arrangements to obtain another tomorrow - will see then if my instinct is right (or wrong!).

Final update - replaced the large flasher relay in the fuse box with another (thanks gain to Serek :y), and indicators and hazards now working normally.  Should have stuck to original gut instinct and saved me swapping hazard switch (pita to get out), swapping the grey relay behind glove box (more work dropping glove box out), and swapping indicator switch.
