What stabiliser do you use???
« on: 21 June 2008, 11:43:42 »

After all the chat about stabilisers when towing I thought I'd ask the question!

Although my unit is supremely stable when towing, and I have lots of experience, I'm still going to fit one for ease and peace of mind. Also, if SWMBO ever has to do the driving (unlikely unless I'm near death!), it will make her life easier! She has got one of the newer licences so it would be on L plates anyway and she's never towed before so it's unlikely to ever happen but...

The question is, what stabiliser bar do people recommend?  :question :question :question

It has to be a bar because I frequently have to tow other trailers with greased hitches so a ball type stabiliser will be no good, unless I keep a spare hitch and swap it over all the time and I'm afraid life's too short!!

You've answered your own question then!  ;) Or you could use an Alko hitch type and carry a bottle of thinners & a rag! :y  :y  :y

Not sure what you mean???? I asked what bar people use because there are several!!! I know and have used the Bulldog bars but there are many other, seemingly identical, bars which are much cheaper! It's not that I'm tight but don't see the point in paying top money when something half the price will do the same job!! Anyway, it's not like I'm desperate for it anyway... Just want the "Belt and Braces" approach!!

Snakemaster is not very good and I say this as an owner, it needs frequent adjustment.

It does work but needs lots of tweaking

Sorry. I was perhaps being too general. I thought you just meant the Alko hitch type vs the blade type. The Alko are far easier to use & you can't loose any of the bits as to all intents it's a single unit.

Bulldog is supposed to be better.

Have an old model 'Scott' (predecesser to 'bulldog'/'snakemaster') that I have used for years, moved it from van to van, (to tight to buy another!!! ) Always worked well for me, but must admit, never really felt the need for one, just a 'precaution' seeing as the Omy tows so well.  :) :)

Alko here. Used Winterhoff, Bulldog and Snakemaster in the past and the Alko blows them away for ease of use and performance. You don't get any noticable kick when passing wagons or being passed by them. No problems towing in windy conditions either. There's some demo videos on the Alko site which do it some justice.

Trouble is I tow lots of other trailers, including hired ones, which have a greased coupling and it would make it a bit of a hassle whenever I wanted to pull the van!!

I think I'll probably go for the Bulldog one as I know they are good!  :-/ :-/ :-/

TBH it's more of an additional safety thing as I don't seem to get any snaking with the van anyway!
