Helicoil
« on: 11 September 2014, 17:49:37 »

As the thread in my toffee TD sump has gone yet again, despite my tender ministrations, I decide to helicoil it to avoid further problems. I bought a kit on line, Neilsen, M14 X 1.5 X 12.4mm, as I had already fitted an oversize plug previously. I have not used one of these kits before, however I am sure that the helicoil inserts are too big. The diameter across the thread of the included tap is 16mm exactly, whereas the diameter across the outside of the inserts is 17mm, and there is no way that they will thread into the tapped hole. Have any of the engineering experts any helpful comments - other than the obvious return it for a refund. ??? :y

Don't Helicoils tighten up as they're screwed into the hole?

Did you get enough inserts to try a couple? If so then drilling and tapping into a similar block(or even MDF) will prove whether you have the correct tap and that the plug will screw in.

Yep, I guess they do, but these just will not start being too big. I've tried squeezing them up with a jubilee clip, but then unable to get close enough to the sump hole. I'm sure if I try it in MDf it will go in due to the soft material which will give way. >:( >:( >:(

Anyway, I've ordered new inserts of the correct size, but I shall be contacting the vendor about the wrong ones. >:( >:( >:(

These are actually not called helicoils, but thread repairers, I'm not sure if there is any difference. :-\ :-\ :-\

Helicoil is a tradename. So only genuine ones can be called Helicoil, as opposed to threaded inserts :y

And they give a very smooth feel to screwing the bolt in.

The thread (manifold side) for 2 of the plenum securing bolts on my car are shagged.
Tried tapping them out but they are too far gone so i've ended up using a bolt and nut to keep it down and air tight.
Would popping thread inserts in there do the trick ?

If so, any idea what size ?

Are you using the insertion tool on the little tang to screw them in?

They are normally 1mm or so larger and in my experience 'just work'

Of course.
I am surprised that they are supposed to be 6% larger, as trying to screw them into a hole 1mm smaller just causes them to expand even more, at which point the tang breaks off! I appreciate that they will be an interference fit, but 1mm bigger? Fortunately I've just picked up a sump plug from my friendly local garage which is the same size as the tapped hole and fits beautifully, however I intend to fit the correct insert when I get them. :y
