Are the RAC any good?

Impossable to really answer that one, Kate. The organisation itself is probably on level pegging with other services. However, remember, you only deal with the RAC man.....and there are loads of them. I have had some good ones...and I have had some plonkers.
Example...friday late afternoon, January last year, thick snow, freezing cold. Aux belt tensioner went. RAC put us in his van, warmed us up, took us to get parts, which I never thought would be available off shelf. Got us going, all repaired. Nice chap.

Example two....two years ago, van Drive belt snapped. Called RAC....chap sat in his van, poncing around in this van for over half an hour, before announcing he could not help, as I was just inside the Half mile from home. When I said he could have towed me home and been gone on his way ages ago, he got snotty. I threatened to report him, but in the end never got round to it. Plonker with attitude....

Probably not much help to you Kate, but that's my personal experience. :y

Thanks. I'm in the AA at the moment. I've called them out lots of times over the years and most of the guys I got have been quite helpful.

I think you're right though. It depends who you get.

That may be partly to do with the fact that you are a woman, Kate. ::) :y :y

My wife tells me  I'm far more helpful to young single women than she thinks necessary. :y :-* :-* :-* :-*

Not sure if helpful is the right word Opti ::) ::)

I agree with terbert's overall comment.  The RAC are not that good; under them for a short while for one of our company cars, and called them out once which ended up, after waiting ages, as just a tow to my home garage.  The AA I have been for decades and have used them a number of times; superb, very helpful, speedy and lovely guys to talk to!! :-* :-* :D :D ;)

I would recommend the AA every time, but get the best deal on the price! ;)

I would say very good, been a member since mid 90's and used them a good few times without problem.  :y

Having used the AA and RAC, I would stick with the AA. Called out the AA a fair few times, arrived promptly (always under an hour), service with a smile. No issues.

RAC; first call out, allegedly a 6 hour wait to get to me. What? 6 hours? I have a 4 yr old child in the car. Doesnt make a difference to them, apparently they were really busy and if I was lucky it may be 4 hours. To be honest, I have never heard that sort of rubbish from any other breakdown provider I have used in the last 10 years. And I was in Essex.

RAC: Second call out, took 90min to get to me and then got snooty with me re: some technicality re my policy.

Never again will I pay to have RAC breakdown cover.

Currently with GEM, absolutely superb service. Plus you get cashback via topcashback. Costs less that either of the two above and has no limit on the number of call outs per year.

It may have been because we had corporate accounts, but we used to have dreadful problems with RAC. Worse was I had a puncture on a tranny, and the spare was in for repair (after a puncture a couple of days previous). I rang the RAC at around 5pm on a cold winter night, got home (about 3 miles away) at gone midnight.
