van tax question
« on: 14 October 2014, 08:22:52 »

Hi all
been searching DVLA site but cannot find anything concrete on this .

If  I buy a used vehicle now, in this case a van . . . if it still has the paper tax disc in date , in this case Feb 2015 . . is this

voided as soon as the vehicle is sold by seller. Or  still being a paper one , is it  transfered with the vehicle to me ?

There seems to be loads of vehicles still being offered for sale with tax on them . :-\ :-\

TIA    Al :y

Any existing road tax is automatically 'cashed in' as the seller transfers ownership ...... you tax it from the beginning of the month & Hey Presto - DVLA have two lots of road tax for that month  ???

Ah  . .  found something now . . . .  existing tax is void at "point of sale"   so now have my answer .

Just rang guy who is selling this van  . . . he's not happy  . . . says "I don't know what I'm talking about" as I now want the

value of the remaining tax deducted our agreed price ::)

The  issue here  is . . . I'm presuming that he will only get refunded for from 1st November to end of Feb & I will have to tax it

from 1st Oct. So DVLA get paid for Octobers tax twice  >:(

Ha ha  . .  he's just called back & said sale is cancelled & the other person interested will take it with the tax on it  ::) ::)

Seems a lot of sellers (& buyers) are clueless on this  ::) ::)

Edit:  must type faster . .  just seen AndyB's reply ;)

The other person may well take it with Tax on it and the Disc may well be in the window but it wont be valid or on the system when the change of keeper paperwork hits the DVLA.

Is the Seller a Dealer / Trader?

The seller will have a shock as it is now his responsibility to cancel it with d.v.l.a. otherwise he can be fined a £1000.....What about the buyer if he does not know that and thinks that it is taxed and later when it is cancelled gets a pull from the old bill a.n.p.r machine...morning sir your car is showing no road fund licence ...(ignorance of the law is not an excuse )........I hope he goes back to the seller asking for the money back in loo of cancelled tax and then for good measure decks the miserable sod  :D :D :D
