A few questions..

Its Christmas and everyone and there dog are flogging sat nav with " updates from £99". Google do it for free.

When using Google maps, how does it know where the traffic congestion is to mark it in red?

If you Google "Google" will the internet crash?

TM died years ago.

Google use the data from users.  Say you are on the M5 between junctions 18 and 19, and you are doing 5mph.  There will be many others in that area using Google, so providing the same data.  That gets relayed to others who's journeys utilise that section of road.

That's how you get the red. (or indeed the yellow).

I think Google Maps must send data back to HQ about where you are and how fast you are travelling because the red line for traffic congestion works down here in Cornwall (on roads that can't have any fixed monitoring equipment)

....must type faster ........  ::)

It does make me wonder somewhat, could I possibly be prosecuted purely on their data?

It's getting late, I want my bed and I'm driving from Cornwall to home after a 'bad day at the office'.  Google knows I've covered some serious miles in a few minutes and know exactly how fast I am travelling at any given point.

There are sensors on major routes that feed back information on traffic flow / speed.........

There are induction loops on all lanes of motorways and major roads which relay data to traffic hubs.  None of the blue 'cameras' are active anymore.  The TrafficMaster System has been defunct for a while.
