We went to a place near Oslo in Norway for Christmas a few years ago, and the entire country seemed to be covered in about 4ft of snow. They dont use salt on the roads as it wont work at the temperatures they get, but they all have to wear winter tyres after a certain date.
Everyone was driving about at the sort of speeds we use on a summers day, even women!
One bloke came out of the exit to the ski slopes in a ferrari and booted it down the road at high speed with no apparent problem, I must say I found the whole experience quite astonishing having just come from a country where a light dusting of snow had shut down most schools and the entire bus network in London
Snow tyres are brilliant.

Snow tyres are brilliant.

They are - although at that time of year most cars (possibly all, I can't recall) in Norway will have studded snow tyres on.. they really are brilliant, even on sheet ice.

I had the same experience when we went skiing in Norway. Airport was Dagli (a frozen lake and a wooden hut). Transfer to the ski resort by bus towing a trailer with suitcases. We sat on the front seats and I marvelled at how effective the buses studded tyres were on quite ghastly roads at good speeds. When we got off they were all unstudded. Respect.

Jesus, my summer nag-pong superroad bargain tyres are close to the legal limit  ::)

I have been driving like the proverbial nun with piles.

Now that STMO's 'friend' from Reading-East is not longer on the website, we no longer get his advice on why we should all fit winter tyres before the first frost in October and only remove them after the last frost in May. ::) ::) ::) :o :o :o

I could never justify the cost of winter tyres in this country, it`s just not cold enough for long enough to warrant the expense  :-\

Official OOF winter tyre advice....

1.) Drive to tyre shop
2.) Ask for budget tyres to be fitted
3.) Drink free coffee whilst tyres are fitted
4.) Drive away and think of what new hobby you could take up with all the time saved fretting over winter tyres.

Hahahahaha

Thinking about this, if my irresponsibility spread and nobody bothered to take their winter tyres off in the summer, then all those extra hot tyres would contribute to global warming and the world would end!  :o

Don't do it folks!!  ;D
