I hired a car in the Uk recently and got a 2.0 diesel Bluemotion Passat. Excellent car. Fast, nice to drive and even so economical (over 60mpg). 177bhp I think.

A few days ago , I visited my "garage" here in Spain and a guy pulled in with the same engined Golf. I admired it but after it had gone the owner said "too complicated, expensive to fix". That was my view of the Passat in years to come for some sucker.

I didn't bother measuring the actual fuel used Al, but I suspect with the weight of the car plus the speed involved that the real fuel consumption was in single figures at that point  ;)

My brother & I once did a trip from his place in Orpington to my daughters in Leicester (using sensible throttle movements) and we averaged between 80-90mph (pretty much motorway from door to door) and that took £45 to do, which was quite impressive as Rhonda's Grand C-Max needed £40 to go from Aldershot to Leicester and that has the crappy 1.6 HDi lump that apparently self destructs at around the 60,000 mile mark.

I've just read this.

Residents living in the north London borough of Islington, who own diesel cars, are to pay a £96 surcharge to park their cars in the street where they live.

This only applies to soot chuckers.

The new charges will be implemented in April 2015.

This extra charge is in addition to the existing residential parking fees of £434. :o :o

London never ceases to amaze me.

First you pay ridiculous money for some godless rundown hovel. Then to add insult to injury you are expected to park your £100,000 Mercedes, Porsche or BMW in the fooking road.....for some passing scroat to damage. :(

It seems just a few short few years ago we were all told that diesels were going to save the Earth with their low carbon figures.

Now it seems  they are public enemy number one.
