Removing sealant
« on: 04 February 2015, 11:34:40 »

Any plumbers on here? What is the best way to remove old sealant from baths, showers and tiles etc? TIA.

Not a plumber so the only advice I have is "with a lot of swearing" and "patience"..

I used both the goop that is meant to dissolve the sealant and one of those hooked tools last time, neither were particularly effective.

Pull as much as you can off manually, use a small piece of wood to get as much off as possible after that, then careful use of a sharp stanley knife blade and finally Acetone to dissolve whats left. Remember that ceramic surfaces are easily marked by metal implements but you can use those foam/plastic pan scrubs with some vigour without problems. GRP or similar surfaces you need extra care on, as these scratch very easily.

Use something like this to scrape the bulk off. Be careful not to dig it in

Then use some of this stuff to remove the residue

Works every time for me

this is the stuff to use

http://www.screwfix.com/p/no-nonsense-sealant-remover-100ml/88987

scrape the large bits off as above and then use the solvent - you'll get it completely clean with that
