Hub off ABS sensor - it's stuck!
« on: 12 February 2015, 00:08:24 »

Well, it's been a brilliant night of working on the lady, also given my Halfords pro tools their first proper outing. The only thing that I have come slightly unstuck with is I'd like to strip down and repaint the steering knuckle - but the sensor for the ABS doesn't want to come out. Undone the tiny hex machine screw with fairly little fuss, and expected the thing to twist and pull out. The knuckle and sensor complete is off the car - I unplugged it at the inner wing. Am I wasting my time do these 'never' come out, or am I just being thick/careful?

I don't mind clouting the thing and destroying it, in order to remove it, just so long as I can get a known good used one off here. Thanks all  :)

If it ain't broke and all that... ::)

Wrap it in masking tape and smear a blob of blutac over the sensor head and around the stub axle and spray away :y

Presumably you removed the hub from the knuckle before you stripped it from the car?...

Oh yes, fear not, the hub is separate form the knuckle!  :) To be honest I was just a bit worried about damaging the sensor as I attack it with the angle grinder with wire brush/flapwheel attachment. Or, to put it another way, if I know that I could just work away without fear of damaging said sensor would be preferable. Strange, ones for Corsas etc appear identical, but can be found separate, but the Omega ones when sold come complete with hub, it seem that way, anyway  :-\

It's practically impossible to remove them intact, IME, so leave it there and spray round it or buy a new one, IMHO.

I once had to replace one and completely failed to get it out, destroying it in the attempt. Solution was to buy a complete hub from Steve Brown for £20, including ABS sensor, and change the lot.

Not really a solution imho, as potentially you'll need to replace the hub in short order :-\

Thanks for the replies gents. Looks like realistically I'll be leaving where it is, and painting round it. It annoys me, anal I know, but if the alternative is to destroy the perfectly good sensor, only to replace with a £70 (x2 for both sides) new one, then I'll just leave it where it is. Ta  :)

I presume you mean the hub bearings will fail. I may be just lucky, but I have never suffered front hub bearing failure on any Senator or Omega in sixteen years.

A mate had one prematurely worn by potholes a few years back, but in the 11ish years of them being in our family, have to say we've never had one go, either. Also bearing (no pun intended) in mind that if Terry's replacement bearing were to fail, he's got another one sitting in the garage, albeit with a stuffed ABS sensor on the knuckle. The bearings just plop off from the knuckle easy peasy (again, I may have just been lucky) so a fairly quick swap. I've got a spare hub from the scrappy with very few miles on it, just in case.  :)

If I were able to get a sensor cheap enough, I'd happily smash the old one out, clean up the knuckle really properly, then refit the good second hand one. I'd also be in a position to grease it before fitment, so that if I ever needed to replace, it wouldn't mean replacing the whole knuckle. Anyway, that's my question answered, thanks all.  :y

I've had to do a couple due to play for Mots, and obviously if changing one, tother won't be far behind...

The issue with second hand, is that you have no control over previous mileage/wear etc, and even if you change both, there's no guarantee that they're off the same car :-\
