Ddiameter of pistons in vented rear calipers?
« on: 21 February 2015, 08:58:10 »

I'm about to change everything in the brakes department in the rear on my 3.2LV6 Omega Estate.

I have the vented discs and the wider calipers. I have ordered everything online from http://www.sparepartstore24.co.uk/ and they now want me to confirm that the piston diameter in the calipers are 42mm.

The only ones they have for sale are the 42mm ones. Are there any other size of the pistons for the vented rear discs?

I have to take everything appart to check this and probably something would break doing that since it is in a really bad condition at the moment, hence the reason to replace everything.

Thanks

From the ones I've seen, the callipers for the vented disks are 42mm, you should see "42" stamped on the back of the calliper body.

The non-vented V6 callipers are 40mm.

Thanks, I'll pull a wheel and look for that stamp.

They told me that with my VIN there were two options, probably non-vented or vented. But didn't all 3.2L get vented discs?

BTW, the part number for the correct GM pads and fitting kit (springs, pins and anti-rattle/squeal shims) is 9195058.  My local dealership were quoting £50 + VAT.

If you're also replacing the fittings for the handbrake shoes, I've found that my local motor factors have the correct kit as being for Cavalier/Calibra - the one they have down for the Omega is the earlier one where the pin went in from the front and not like the later ones where the pin protrudes from the back plate.

I think all 3.2s were fitted with vented disks but for the dealers and motor factors there seems to be a lot of confusion.

I tend to go along with the old parts in my hand so I can verify they match before I leave  ;)

I've ordered everything from http://www.sparepartstore24.co.uk/ including the parkingbrake shoes and mounting kit.

I got the brake pad pins and springs from my local GM-dealer, #9195055 for the pins and #9195056 for the springs.
They also had a kit with pads, pins and springs.
4 Pins and 2 springs were £50 incl VAT

I rebuilt the rear brakes on mine back in November and changed from non-vented to vented setup.

The handbrake on the car had always been terrible and I found out why when I stripped it down - the wrong springs had been used to hold the shoes against the backplate so they were not sitting square and only a small part of the friction material was in contact with the drum  >:(   Totally different after it was all put together correctly, possibly best handbrake on all the Carltons/Omegas I've owned in the last 23 years  8)

That was just for the fitting kit?  :o  :o  :o

Did they not offer you the whole set with the pads (per the part num I gave above)?

I had already the pads on order from the other place.

Those pins are expensive, there are a few threads about that here.

It had a 42 stamped on the backside of the caliper.

Ah, I see.  Sounds to me though that you could've had a spare set of pads for free  ;)

Yeah £50 for pins and springs is madness!
