another problem! eml under load
« on: 07 March 2015, 10:33:34 »

Right just got the leak off pipes sorted and done the fuel filter. Car been off the road for 2 months. It's a 2001 2.2dti. It's first trip is going home from work, towing my spare car back on the a frame. Every time I get to a hill, the light comes on for about 2 seconds, I can hear the turbo knocking off, then the light goes off, everything works again for about 10 seconds, then happens again, this keeps happening till I get up the hill. Any ideas of common causes? Hoping simple fix because I'm getting really p****d off with this car  >:(

Update since. Without towing. If I'm don't over 2.5k revs it's still showing signs of fuel starvation (loss of power, worse than just not accelerating, and blue smoke comes or the back). I'm thinking  could be the fuel pump on its way out. It's OK if I gently accelerate and keep under 2.5k. Power seems down compared to before it was off the road too.

I'm no longer willing to spend significant money on this car, but if there's anything cheap I can try please let me know. Thanks

The lack of power over 2.5k rpm, and blue smoke while accelerating, but running OK at low revs are all classic turbo failure indicators. For a rough and ready test, remove the pipe from the turbo to the intercooler and waggle the impeller. If there is any play in it, you've definitely found the problem.
And that won't be cheap I'm afraid.

Hmm didn't think of that, but could make sense. That's cheaper than a fuel pump anyway. How hard are they to replace? Not something I'd do normally, but its right on top so, could be able to do myself. Get a second hand turbo, makes the difference between selling as spares and repairs and selling it at a decent price (I'm only using it till my galaxy is back on the road)
