Water filled coil packs will put up those codes, as does a faulty maf..

Would a faulty MAF actually cause a misfire, or just throw up the codes?

iirc, a faulty MAF causes rough running as the ecu tries to second guess the intake air volume and tweaks the fueling to try and reach a happy medium... Hence if the rough running improves with the MAF unplugged, then the Maf is goosed...

Misfire codes are generally spark related, so coil pack contamination/degradation or fouled plugs :y

So if I get there and it's running like a bag of spanners, I can just unplug the MAF an if it improves I can just drive it back with it left unplugged?

Indeed, with it unplugged, the ecu cannot see it,and instead of trying to rely on duff info, it resorts to a base map... Might flatten the response slightly, but it is not limp mode :y
