Can anyone help a little old CORSA out please?
« on: 05 May 2015, 19:44:18 »

Evening,

After the success of my mates omega being fixed/remedied in this forum I thought I'd try another cheeky one on the side.

I'm hoping that one or two of you out there have, do or try to work on multiple Vauxhalls!!

On the success of the omega another friend has come asking about his little Corsa, she is a 55 plate 2006 1.2 petrol Corsa. She has started to play up, symptoms were loss of power, engine light coming on occasionally, lacking in power under load and an idle that surges between 500 and 750 rpm.

I firstly did an obd2 check and got no codes... I have given her a decent run and all of the above occurred even a flash of engine light under load. Got her home and the OBD2 reader then got a single code.. P0301 so number one cylinder misfire!!!

I will be tackling the issue on Friday but are there any common faults that spring to mind??  I will obviously check the plugs look at the coil pack, try and do a compression test etc...

Any initial help would be very much appreciated... There must be a Regular who has had this before somewhere out there.

Thanks in advance

Dave

Clean out the TB and breathers. Check for air or vacuum leaks if the revs are surging as these don't have an ICV.

Throw a genuine GM CTS (ECU one, not gauge, if there are two on this engine) at it, it can solve a world of problems.

The misfire will be plugs or coil pack most likely. Check/change the plugs, give it a bit of a service and see how it goes.

Thanks for all that deviator,

Once I got my head round all the acronyms or TLAs I get the idea.

I had a quick look last night, I swapped the spark plugs about and ran it again, I noticed the spark would only break down under load not on idle, so still doing it and again after clearing the codes then ran and rechecked got the same misfire no 1 cylinder code.

I then cleaned out the fat and thin breather pipes they looked like smokers arteries.... Cleared lots of mayo and water out!!!!

Other than carb cleaner what is the best way to clean the Throttle Body out??

As long as the reason isn't an engine catastrophe then I've been asked to do a full service on her and sort the water leak into the drivers footwell, but that's a whole other thread... (Pedal box seal)

Thanks again

Dave

So sound like coil pack is the issue, under load you need max volts and hence the failure shows.

Leak into drivers foot well, the approach I take is to remove scuttle cover and unbolt the pedals, unbolt the master cylinder and servo and move up slightly. Remove bolts to the problem plate and ease it so there is a 10mm or so gap. Clean area really well. The use a polyurethane sealant and inject it and force it into the gap before bolting the plate back down. Now add another bead of sealant over the joint and spread it out. The refit the various removed parts. Done about 5 or 6 like this and it works a charm without having to do a full strip down.

As Mark said, these symptoms points to a spark issue, so either coil pack and/or leads (not sure if this engine has them) but giving the ICV a clean wont hurt it either :y

Looks like some good advice. I've bought a coil  pack and a full service kit so will try the coil  pack first before I do the service, it can always go back if it is not the culprit.

Re the water leak, thanks for that too!! That's the afternoon job, it's already been smothered all round with what looks like clear bathroom silicone sealant but done without moving or undoing anything.

I will report on tomorrow's frivolities  tomorrow....

Yet again great advice from OOF...

It was the coil pack, that and a damned good service has made the old girl as good as new...

Re the water leak, ended up removing the brake servo for better access, now my neighbour with the same vehicle, same year, same problem wants his doing too...

Obviously very common on Corsas

Cheers

It is , the water leak is poor design.

Glad to hear the Corsa is working fine now. Ours is due its MOT next month but I am taking it in to "our" garage in Stranraer while we are visiting next week.
