My omega tried to kill me a couple of times in the wet. I had conti's on it.
Honestly, you'd have to try an Autogrip in damp conditions to believe how bad they are. Its not possible to go around a corner/roundabout above walking pace without swapping ends. I admit I'm not the worlds best driver, but I don't think anyone could catch it.
Not that I'm suggesting suicide, STMO ;D
It wouldn't work in a FWD, or I'd give it a go....honest. ::)
You wanna bet?
Put something reasonable on the front, and Autogrip on the rear and even on a fwd motor, the rear will want to overtake the front in the damp.  :-[
I know as the rear tyres on my current ride were Autogrip when I first picked it up!
They only lasted about a fortnight before they were replaced!  :o
Absolutely leathal in the damp!

Don't tyres have to pass a test or something? Or can you just put any old thing on provided it has at least 1.6mm of tread?

I would highlight part of your post, but I can't :D

Fundamental certification test of a tyre requires said tyre to be black, more or less round, and mire or less the correct size...

UK law dictates that cars have at least1.6 mm of tread across the central three quarters of the tread, and that commercial vehicles have at least 1.0mm of tread across any three quarters of the tyre circumference :y

Bare in mind that 1.6mm of tread is the legal minimum tread depth across the centre three quarters, in other words get them changed :y

If you are anxious to meet your maker promptly, may I recommend Autogrip? They will kill you the first time you pass a lampost that a dog has pissed up.
