Hi Fellow Omega lovers,

I am having some major trouble with my oil burner, it started about 8weeks ago & 4 garages  & a pocketful of money later, my car is still off the road, I have been informed I need an ECU & key ECU transponder, & I cannot seem to source them both together, I wonder if anyone can help me...

I sent my car to get a starter motor repair, my usual mechanic was to busy so I sent it elsewhere, where they changed my starter motor but knackered my car & charged me for the privilege.

3 garages later, it seems a likely explanation my car was jump started with the polarity the wrong way round & the ECU is blown, also it seems sometime by the previous owner the transponder system has been bypassed somehow, now my car wont start, it starts but the revs are high & then cuts out. I have £2K in the car & I am running out of ideas & I really cant afford to write the car off, I live & work in Skopje, but I am English & I have a UK address. Could some one point me in a direction that I possible could get my car running again. The ECU number is 0 281 001 427 1997 2.5 td manual.

Any help or advice appreciated I am really getting depressed by the whole experience.
Thanks in advance
Cheers Martin  :)

I know nothing about the TD so wait until an owner comes along. But they might ask if there are any fault codes stored in the ecu. I believe the TD can be paper clipped for 2 digit codes.

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90581.0

Reads engine codes only. Post the codes up, if any, and see what people say.

They may also suggest that a new ecu might need tech 2 to programme it, IF replacement should be required. There are tech 2 owners on here.

Best of luck with it. Seems you've had only bad luck so far. :( ..... :y

Is the car in Skopje or the UK?

If the car has had jump leads attached with the wrong polarity then the alternator will be fried (don't ask ::)) - almost everything else is fuse protected and it is a lottery as to whether the fuse blows before the component. Worth checking that there are no blown fuses before spending any more money.

The ECU's on the TD's and the earlier Petrol models are quiet robust, the symptoms you describe, where it starts and then cuts out does sound like a Transponder issue or the ECU been changed without Transponder pairing.

Do you have a Transponder in the key or is it just a blank one, you say the previous owner(s) had the Transponder disabled, some Garages just bodge this by tapping a paired transponder to the Ing. Pick Up Loop aground the Ing. Barrel so any cut key will work.

I would start by checking the Transponder Module around the Ing. Barrel, making sure its complete and is plugged in etc, also worth unplugging the ECU then plugging in again making sure the connected strap bar is firmly home, also have a look around the ECU (and a good smell) and check for any burnt cables etc.

Thanks for the replies, the car is in Skopje...MK

I really hope the alternator is not fried also....
The current mechanic has had it on a full scan, and the ECU & other faults are showing, the car has been chipped, it used to be quite rapid for an old oil burner, I think the previous owner circumvented the transponder & now I think that is the issue, the mechanic changed the Chip for a standard one & still no joy......

I pulled the trigger today on a compatible ECU/transponder & key in Germany on Ebay, it cost me 200euro plus shipping, it killed me paying so much, I just could not find a compatible kit cheaper....I really hope that this will solve the issue, if not I will call it  a day & lay it to rest before I spend any more, and put it down to experience.

I will update when it arrives.

Thanks for all the replies & suggestions
Cheers Martin

I believe chipping the TD involves opening the ecu case, de soldering the chip are re soldering in a new one. Could the solder be failing, dry joint perhaps? Might it be worth opening the old ecu case for an examination?  ...just a thought.

But reguardless the performance chip itself might still be re useable.(or indeed at fault from what's been said above :( ) it will be a shame to loose that performance, although thinking about it, there's a source of performance chips on here I believe, iirc :y
