« on: 18 September 2015, 23:00:16 »

having had a reminder to renew my license, I did. it was due to be renewed on the 20th October but it has come back starting from 15th September. I always wonder why it ran out in October has my birthday is xmas eve. I paid the £21.50p the post office charge for renewal. having got a new license & looking at the expiry date 23/12 / 2015.(a day before I,m 70} it only lasts for just over 2mths. that cannot be right. :-\

That sucks, but it is right. You need a doctors note (I think) to continue driving past 70.

Nope you need the following . . . .

"To renew online, you need:

    a valid UK passport
to be a resident of Great Britain - there’s a different service in Northern Ireland
to pay £14 by MasterCard, Visa, Electron, Maestro or Delta debit or credit card (there’s no fee if you’re over 70 or have a medical short period licence)
addresses of where you’ve lived over the last 3 years
your current driving licence (if you don’t have your licence you must say why in your application)
    your National Insurance number
to not be disqualified from driving"

If you renew your licence at age 70 it should last three years. Well, it did in my dads case anyway.
He had to send a form off with his application from 70 years of age onwards and every three years after that.

Very complex form  ::) , it has questions such as:

Can you see, with or without spectacles = Yes
Do you have any medical reason that prevents you driving = No

Answer these questions truthfully and you're sorted.  :y No doctor involvement whatsoever under normal circumstances.

The only thing I can think of is that your licence expired at a funny time so they have just spanned the gap until the 70 legislation kicks in.  :-\
Does seem odd though.  :-\

speaking to others they have all renewed a day before their 70th birthday. as you say answered a few question & was fixed up for 3yrs. I have a feeling that somehow whoever first processed my license flagged my dads  birthday up. had a email from the dvla saying they are looking into it

I received an email from the Dvla , basically telling me that I will receive another reminder to fill in again & to quote a reference number then a new license will be issued free of charge. :y :y
