Fitting an amp to CDX H/U
« on: 27 December 2015, 16:09:39 »

I have been looking for an elite (see other post in general) but a few members have suggested buying a CDX and fitting a better audio system instead of looking for an elite for the bose system ? Well if i did get a CDX and it was fitted with the standard headunit to make the sounds better but keep the original headunit could i fit an aftermarket 2 or 4 channel amp at line level and then fit better speakers..... maybe even a small sub. Has anybody ever done this ? I know fitting an aftermarket headunit would be far easier but i do like the OEM look of the exisitng headunit. Ta

I'm sure there is a guide to fitting line level outputs to a CCR2006 in the maintenace guide ICE section . Done by Kevin Wood as I remember  :-\

Aftermarket double din looks better than a single din with that daft cubbyhole underneath imho...

Same principle as the NCDC mod, but if you're unencumbered by Bose, then you might as well fit a well specced double din unit with Bluetooth and keep the glovebox :-\

Now that double din screen unit does look ok, the few pics i have seen have had single din units in with trim and they look awful but that does look ok....... a unit with nav, phone and all the mod con's would be nice, could also fit an amp in the normal way, also there are a lot more CDX's out there than elites. Thanks

If you want to keep the head unit but boost / improve the sound quality in a big way, fit a Alpine KTP 445A amp behind the glove box and splice into the original wiring  :y

Don't forget to upgrade your speakers to suit  :y :y

The KTP 190U will also power a small sub so you can fill out the bass if needed  :)

Visually, a full sized screen, ie 7"+, will look cleaner than a sub 7" with controls to one side...

If you can handle Region 1 dvds, then the US is a good place to look as prices are reasonable, even allowing for shipping etc ;)

The larger screens would do away with the need for more trim which again i think would look best, i will keep this in mind and maybe build my own '' bose '' system in a cdx whereas i will get the best of both worlds and am more able to choose what i want with the added advantage of it being 21st century tech.

Do you really need an Amp? The standard speakers are good, let down by piss poor 2006/2006 units, a new H/U alone does wonders. In the 2.2 I'm running an Alpine H/U with standard speakers, I personally like cubby hole, useful for a phone when running tunes, as it can be tucked away.

If you don't fancy breaking into your HU to fit some RCA Line Level outs, there are plenty of Line / Speaker in Amps around where you can just feed your speaker levels in directly, available from Kenwood, Alpine, Blaupunkt to name a few.

Not going to sound as clean as line level in, but its a start, and the Amp is there ready for future upgrades as and when.
