slam panel screws
« on: 26 January 2016, 15:02:26 »

I could not move either of those two star screws that holds the slam panel on. dare not heat them up & giving  them some welly would probably do damage to the fixing points.  loads of w d been used.

You mean the cover screws? Slam panel should be welded in :o

Use force... Worst case break the cover off and get pliers on them... ;)

Carefully grind the bolt heads off using a Dremel, taking care not to damage the covers.
Remove the covers.
Then fiddle about with the remains of the screws; your Dremel should do that too

That should also work :D

Was thinking along the lines of rusted in place but otherwise serviceable...

I find that small Torx bolts are as bad as Allen ones; they round out very easily. Then you struggle to undo them with molegrips as the heads are radiused. Grinding the head off is then the quickest, easiest and most efficient solution.

As for Dremels, for this sort of occasional job, buy a cheap one with accessories. It's the accessories that are the problem with these things, as even the expensive ones are hopeless.

If mole grips don't work try some Irwin sockets :y
