If you were feeling really down, within reason, that is actually a legitimate reason to not be able to attend work and if your employer values you, they won't penalise you for that at all.

there attitude was when i worked the last store doing 12 weeks, if you want a weekend off you will be replaced,i went sick one night as did 42 nights solid, thought i was gonna collapse with exaustion. >:( >:( >:( i work through an agency and i get 2 quid an hr more than there own blokes on the books. but most construction companies treat you like shite now. so many foreigners here now they just break you off and get someone cheaper >:( >:(
iirc the working time regulations state that if you work 7 days one week you can only do 5 days the following week.also you should have an 11 hour break between shifts.

its not as simple as that when your self employed and working from an agency, i had a go once before about the hs i was doing at heathrow, did a ghoster(24 hr shift) 1 night and then back in 5 hrs later. i was laid off 2 days later and they got someone else.

Agencies are no longer exempt from the working time directive! They must comply with the law. If they don't you can take them to a tribunal. Having said that... I know the position you are in and sympathise!

Yes but, the individual can still opt out.....so check the contracts you have signed!

I was under the impression (when I was running an agency for drivers 4 years ago) that the opt out clause was no longer a legal option!

Just my thoughts and I don't know whether I'm right or not... :-/ :-/ :-/

i think constructionis going to be pretty dead for a while anyway rich,it has had its boom and is now going bust by the look of it.the company i worked in for the last 20 years makes prestressed concrete floors and has had a long period of being awash with money,in the last year it has ended up on its knees (and i have ended up jobless)
it may be worth looking into some kind of re-training in the not to distant. especially if you could re-train to do something that you enjoy doing. i have been thinking along those lines myself, but it is easier said than done.
