One for the DIY'ers - Liquid DPM
« on: 09 May 2016, 10:26:54 »

I'm throwing this one out to the OOF collective as a brief (c10min) googling hasn't yielded the result I want  ;)

Over the weekend I took up/off the tiles on the walls and floor of our Utility room, its in a single storey flat-roof extension at the back of the house and (being kind) was originally built "down to a price".

The problem I've got is that the extension went in on a concrete slab which either had no dpm installed or possibly had a bitumen one that's now broken down. on lifting the floor tiles there was a fair bit of dampness trapped under there - enough to have almost totally de-bonded the tiles from their cement base.

What I'm after is a liquid dpm that I can put on the floor and lap up the walls as far as the injection DPC as I think this should cure any future issues. There are no shortage of these products, the problem is I then want to use a floor levelling compound over the top. All the products I've seen recommend a minimum of 50mm screed on top which is no good as it would give an uneven floor level and lower the already low ceiling. Not to mention the additional cost/time expended.

So, does anyone know of a liquid dpm that I can use a floor leveller over the top of?

I have used the Permaguard liquid Epoxy DPM before, you can put a floor directly over this so should be no issues with adding self levelling.

I Should add, I suspect you may be getting confused on the screed thickness, the specs generally state you can apply to concrete or a minimum 50mm screed, they are not specific about the thickness of what then goes on top   :y

But the epoxy stuff is very good on a well prepared dust free base, you can add a fine sand to the second or third coat to improve adhesion to the floor levelling compound.

Thanks Mark, you're absolutely right, I was reading the substrate thickness, not the thickness of what was to go on top  :-[. Please read the manual there I think! I'll give the epoxy ones a go and see how I get on.

I think this house is going to battle us right to the bitter end. The Utility was supposed to be a cheap and straightforward job - riiight  ;D
