Might buy a lottery ticket this week.
« on: 14 May 2016, 13:11:49 »

A small stroke of luck this morning, but I would like to know what the odds are of it happening.
I have got all the bits together to do the cambelt on my newly acquired 3.2, apart from the 30mm swan neck spanner.
A place about 10 miles away advertises them on their website for £20 (a tad steep) so I drove over there this morning to get one, only to be told they don't hold them in stock but could get one for the middle of next week.  ::)
Then spent an hour going around the various places in the areas where I might get one, but no luck at all.
On the way home I was about to drive past a car boot sale site (haven't been to one in many years) and had the thought that it might be worth a look. Nothing to lose etc.
Got out of the car and the 2nd stall I looked at had a bucket of spanners on it. I pulled out the first big ring spanner I saw and lo and behold it was a 30mm deep offset spanner.  ;D
"How much for the spanner mate ?"  "A couple of quid will do thanks." I spied a nice bench vice that I fancied for my shed.
"How much for the vice mate ?"......"you can have that and the spanner for a tenner".
Off I go home, a very happy bunny. Its the little things that make a day a good one or a bad one.  :)

For that price you won't mind cutting the end off it to make it a bit more wieldy!

My locking kit is the basic Sealey one that doesn't have the spanner, which I wouldn't have bought new, but it was cheap off Ebay.
The first time I used it I struggled with a fullsize spanner. Having checked the price of the spanner new, I improvised:

That is an abused 30mm socket I found in a scrap toolbox. I bored out the rounded out 1/2" drive hole to accommodate the appropriate Torx socket, and Tig welded some steel strap to it for a handle. Bent the handle in the vice for a bit more offset, and drilled a hole in the end to cabletie it to the rest of the set.

It cost nothing, but is very effective. So that's a win.

Lottery ?

Almost given it up since the increase to 50 balls. The odds of of winning are now absurd. I used to get the occasional 3 numbers, now lucky to get any. All a bit of a con.

Agreed, it`s a lot of a con, two balls is the best you can hope for on a regular basis and all that gets you is a free go........and then maybe another free go after that  :-\

I started doing the thunderball but TBH thats not much better but I have had regular £3 wins which pays for the tickets at least  ;)

And Nick W's probably works better than a spanner as well :y.

I must scrub up on my welding, but following the schoolboy error sunburn incident, I've struggled with enthusiasm ;D
