GM were aware that the breathers can/will become blocked, (in the instance above, through icing up in extreme cold climates) they had a cure. What appears to be a separate set of pvc pipe which presumably are a larger diameter than the 'hollows' in the standard breather bridge.

Nice find dbg. So the condensation in there freezes in cold weather? Interesting.

Instead of installing the kit couldn't the holes be widened as they suggest? So the 1mm holes become 4mm. Thoughts anyone?

Applies to the 2003-4 CTS... Might be a specific reason it affects that particular model, and not the Catera

With the small amount, of moisture that would accumulate in those pipes, can't see how it would freeze, with the heat produced under the bonnet. Obviously GM did

When I found it I was more thinking that a larger diameter of pipe would exponentially increase the time it takes for the (what are very thin) tubes in the breather bridge to block with gunky oil.

Flip the logic, and certainly if GM had made all breather bridges this design from the outset, none of us would now be seeking out a one-piece bridge with much narrower tubes.


As you say Mr The Bear, the idea of widening the holes is 'food for thought'. I know the counter is, of course ''just clean your breathers regularly'' etc but as I say, an interesting thought

Aye    Given that GM themselves deemed it worthwhile to widen them as per above, I can only assume it wouldn't affect anything. The narrowed apertures down at the back of the engine which also gunk up would strangle any air flow down anyway. Logically, therefore, I'd imagine that the breather bridge itself could be made up of bits of drainpipe without any detrimental effect.

Maybe could cause a slower reaction with the vacuum system due to the larger area that it has to suck on
