Leak - bulkhead into Heater Matrix
« on: 06 June 2016, 10:59:43 »

As above. Have a small coolant leak, which will start getting expensive in antifreeze if I don't sort it.

Eventually found a small drop coming from the bottom union that goes into the heater matrix on the bulkhead. Is this likely to be the actual pipe/union (presumably easy to replace) or the pipe 'attached to the car' if that makes sense.

Also, is this a known issue or am I just unlucky? Not found anyone else with this issue on the forum upon searching is all. Ta in advance chaps.  :)

Both the metal heater pipes that run through the bulk head from the engine bay are joined into the heater matrix by a push fit secured by a metal plate.

They have a rubber 0 ring on them which seals into the body of the matix being pushed tight by the metal plate. This is secured with a allen bolt think it 4/5 mm from memory.

Could be either the 0 ring has decided to let go or maybe just the plate needs tightening up .

0 rings are GM only as a strange size and also an astronomic price if memory serves me right from when I replaced heater matrix some years ago on old Elite. You will also need to be double jointed and have a good hot bath ready after laying upside down in the drivers footwell. ;D

If not that then matrix may be the issue but more likely the 0 ring

Oh good, inaccessible and costly.

Well that's not like Omegas, is it?  ::)

Cheers, o-ring sounds very likely.

As an addition, the slight traces of water I found were in the engine bay side of the pipes, not in the footwell. Just wanted to check that I'm on the right track before I go wasting time and money messing with the heater matrix. So we're saying that water is weeping down through the bulkhead and into the engine bay, yes?

Easy enough to check the heater matrix side... but what you suggest, ie fluid coming from inside out is physically impossible due to the fact matrix sits below bulkhead connection  ;)

More chance of leak coming from hbv :y

If coolant leak is evident on drivers footwell carpet or arond the pipework "inside the car" its either 0 rings on matrix pipework or matrix itself.

Visible from engine bay its either the push fit connections on the rubber pipework where it joins to the metal sections that run through the car or leaking above that and only being visible there being the lowest point before falling to the ground.

And when you have fathomed out how to get the fcucker off without having a nervous brake down and trashing the rest of the car in frustration, give us a ring and show me because the top one on mine has a nice pink coating on it  ::) ;D

ahh, that's saved me a bit of back-aching work, then.  :)

Yes, it's engine side, and I'll be looking at HBV. Are we thinking, therefore, that there's an HBV leak, which is drizzling down to that union at the bulkhead?

Tricky, of course, because of the heat, water does evaporate away rather quickly, making diagnosis a pain.

I'll make a point to have a look at your pink coating next time I see you Gonads.  :y (reads very different, depending how quickly you read that  :D)
